While many heirloom, Persian, Turkish, and Oriental rugs require professional cleaning, you can maintain the beauty of many area rugs in between visits from Rainier Chem-Dry – Tacoma’s carpet and rug cleaning experts:

Vacuum regularly. One of the most important aspects of maintaining area rugs (and carpets) is vacuuming on a regular basis; this ensures that most dirt and debris is removed and isn’t left to be embedded into the rug. If you have a rug with a fringe, you’ll need to take a little care: Start from the center of the rug, and gently work toward the fringe. Be extra careful not to catch the strands in the beater bar. If you want to vacuum under the fringe, left the edge away first.

Leave dirt and moisture at the door. Placing absorbent mats at the most frequently used entrances to your home will help you track in less soil. If you have expensive rugs or carpeting to protect, consider removing your shoes upon entry into your home.

Maintain good air quality. Much of the material on your rugs and carpets used to be airborne. Regularly changing the filters in your heating and air conditioning systems will help capture dust and other materials before they land on your rugs.

Keep a rug cleaner handy. You’ll want to have a spot removal solution on hand that you’ve tested and confirmed to be safe on your rugs. Apply a small amount of cleaner in an inconspicuous place on your rug (such as under the edge), and then dab away with a white cloth; you’ll want to make sure that there is no color transfer.

Machine wash gently, if possible. Don’t consider machine-washing your rug unless the label confirms that it’s “machine washable.” Before washing, take the rug outside and vigorously to remove loose dust, dirt, and grit. Use mild detergent and warm water, and tumble your rug dry at the lowest heat setting.

Beat larger area rugs. Some rugs are too large to machine-wash, and too large to shake. But if you have a clothesline handy, you may be able to put the rug over the line and beat it like your grandmother used to do.

Don’t try to clean Oriental, Turkish or Persian rugs. Attempting to clean these expensive, delicate rugs can result in shrinking, stretching, color bleeding, or rippling. Leave these rugs to the experts.
